Tokelau Police needs assessment – update

Inspector Karen Smith from PPDVP and Superintendent Ross Ardern from New Zealand Police made a joint assessment of the police’s existing capacity and their needs in Tokelau between the 7th and the 19th September 2010.

Karen and Ross spent time on each of the three atolls meeting with police, community groups and village leaders.

Visits to schools formed a key part of the discussions and the assessment.

A proposal for training needs around domestic violence will be developed in conjunction with the three atolls and their national management office based in Apia.

As an interim and immediate step, PPDVP is working with Tokelau to have up to three police members attend the PPDVP Regional Conference in Nadi in October.

Karen will provide a report and photographs on her findings, and her experiences, which we will post soon.
